Global Women's Strike
Huelga Mundial de Mujeres
We are an international network campaigning for recognition and payment for all caring work, for a caring economy where the market is at the service of human beings not human beings at the service of the market, and for an end to power relations of sex, race, class, income, nation, age, disability, occupation, sexuality . . .
Who We Are |
INVEST IN CARING NOT KILLING!
Our international petition, A Living Wage for Mothers and Other Carers, demands that: 1) Every worker be paid a living wage, including mothers and other carers. 2) National and international budgets redirect financial support and resources to mothers and other carers. Sign HERE: Women and girls do 2/3 of the worlds’ work – in the home, on the land and in the community – but most of this work is unwaged. Women produce and reproduce the human race. We are most of the primary carers everywhere in the world, fighting for the survival and well-being of children and sick, disabled and elderly people, in the home and outside, in war as in peace. Women grow most of the world’s food. Most carers, starting with mothers, get no wages and aren’t considered workers. Survival and caring are not prioritised; even caring for the survival of the planet is treated as 'unaffordable'. Yet +$1.67 trillion/year is spent on the military worldwide. 10% of this would provide the essentials of life for all: water, sanitation, basic health, nutrition, literacy, and a minimum income. Investing in carers redirects economic and social policies towards survival, health and well-being – for every individual and for the planet which sustains us all. The Global Women's Strike is a grassroots network with national co-ordinations in a number of countries. Invest in caring not killing is our strategy for change. Women, and men who support our goals, take action together on 8 March, International Women’s Day, and throughout the year. We address power relations among us, and make sure that each of our campaigns is backed by our collective power. GWS works with and is supported by Payday, an international network of men. Women from different sectors are involved: women of colour, Indigenous and rural women, mothers, women in waged work, lbgtq, sex workers, religious activists, women with disabilities, older and younger women... |
OUR DEMANDS |
Payment for all caring work - in wages, pensions, land & other resources. What is more valuable than raising children & caring for others? Invest in life & welfare, not military budgets or prisons
Pay equity for all, women & men, in the global market. Food security for breastfeeding mothers, paid maternity leave and maternity breaks. Stop penalizing us for being women. Don't pay 'Third World debt'. We owe nothing, they owe us. Accessible clean water, healthcare, housing, transport, literacy. Non-polluting energy & technology which shortens the hours we work. We all need cookers, fridges, washing machines, computers, & time off! Protection & asylum from all violence & persecution, including by family members & people in positions of authority. Freedom of movement. Capital travels freely, why not people? Our international petition demands A Living Wage for Mothers and Other Carers. HERE |
